When silhouettes take
shape and tales unfold
A fleeting glance at a Rubert Soysa painting reveals
little, merely a blur of brushstrokes, a symphony of shades. With
each closer look, the tale unfolds – silhouettes take shape,
their emotions come to life, their bond becomes apparent.
Rubert’s art is distinct. His selected medium
is oil on canvas. His characteristic style lies in his strong brushstrokes
in a blend of natural hues. His preferred theme is people and their
interaction. His paintings are timeless.
The veteran artist’s current exhibition,
being held from October 20 to November 3 at the Paradise Road Galleries,
further explores the theme of human relationships. He skilfully
captures the positive sentiments and joyful moments shared between
people, be they between families, friends or lovers.
“I don’t draw life-like features in
my paintings because it would take the focus away from the theme.
Secondly, I want the viewer to see themselves in the scenarios I
recreate on each canvas. They are then able to draw parallels with
their own life and feel a personal connection with my art,”
Rubert explains.
The intensity of his brushstrokes and choice of
colours embody gender, feeling and circumstances.
For instance, the passionate embrace of two lovers
is beautifully portrayed through softer tones and tender shading
in a serene image. Furthermore, an extra dimension is added to his
latest collection through contouring in black, which creates a shadow
effect.
The exhibition also has a selection of paintings
depicting a man holding a semblance of a sapling. Titled ‘Man
with flower pot’, they signify Rubert’s idea that even
within the most evil exterior is a kind and gentle soul. A gentle
individual himself, Rubert shares his sense of optimism and caring
through his vivid paintings.
