Dreaming of home you
set out that day
By Captain (Retd.) Ranjith Wettewa S.L.N. R.S.P.
|
A lone soldier looks at the scene in Habarana,
soon after the blast. |
‘Join the Navy and see the world’
It was true a few decades ago
When you join now you cannot even see
Half of the Sri Lankan coast properly
In spite of that you joined the Navy
Knowing very well the perils at sea
Seeking adventure and an income
To fulfil the aspirations of family
Your commitment so noble
After a strenuous deployment
You come ashore with fervent hopes
Of reunions and rendezvous
Dreaming in homeward bound convoy
Maximum utilization of limited leave
Once passing Habarana
Dreams almost become reality
Then and only then
Your dreams and hopes disintegrate
You are no more
Your charred body beyond recognition.
Never rejoice in victory
Never underestimate enemy
Be silent, prepared and perform unseen
Like a diver, like a submariner.
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We shall remember you
With pride and love.
