  By Our Political Editor

The story doing the rounds in the corridors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Republic Square is about a telephone call its Secretary, Palitha Kohona, received from President Mahinda Rajapaksa last Wednesday afternoon.

  Mangala or Avamangala?
  By Rypvanwinkle

My Dear Mangala, I thought I should call you Mangala for once, because I am not sure whether to call you Jayamangala or Avamangala because I am not sure whether you are coming or going...from the Cabinet that is!

Situation Report
  Fight now and pay later
  By Iqbal Athas
It was past 2 a.m. last Monday when the well equipped Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Beechcraft was on patrol over the skies of Trincomalee. Such patrols over North and East have become a routine after the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) demonstrated its air strike capability. Suspecting it to be a LTTE aircraft, a Sri Lanka Navy patrol directed fire at the reconnaissance plane.
The Economic Analysis
Exploding expenses and easing the economy
  By the Economist

Thoughts from London
Chill out Chilcott or go to the back of the class
  By Neville de Silva

Focus on Rights
Imperative revisions to the criminal law to ensure accountability
  By Kishali Pinto Jayawardena

There is a popular perception, even among members of the Sri Lankan judicial and legal community, that the doctrine of command responsibility is not prevalent in our law. While this perception is certainly true of the criminal law, a different rationale has been articulated in the context of fundamental rights violations.

Lobby

Inside the glass house
All the US president's men — and women — for UN jobs
By Thalif Deen at the united nations
When the beleaguered President of the World Bank Paul Wolfowitz resigns June 30 -- in the aftermath of a raging political storm over charges of favouritism in an institution that preaches the virtues of honesty and integrity to the outside world -- the United States will nominate another American for the plum job.
