House or no house they have to go |
ADVERTISTMENTS |
For most, the tsunami which hit Sri Lanka in December 2004 with the ferocity of a predator is now only a distant memory. But for many thousands, those terrible waves are as real as if they shattered their lives yesterday. These thousands of men, women and children are still languishing in temporary shelters, homeless and amidst the filth and muck generated by long-term stays in overcrowded locations. To add to their woes, now hangs a deadline: whether you have a house or not, depart from the camp on May 31, Poson poya. |

Dance tribute to a Guru |
I called him “Thabu Aiya”. His sudden death on March 15 was a shock to all of us and his beloved wife and two daughters.
Our friendship goes back 14 years. We were both in the Land Commissioner’s Department. Mr. Thabrew was a surveyor and I was Superintendent of Development Works in the same department. He also worked in Iraq and Oman as a surveyor and gained knowledge on the new methods of his trade. |

Pain in the back |
Plagued by persistent lower back pain? You are not alone in this as four out of five suffer from the common phenomenon that is second only to the common cold, at some point in their life. “Most however recover from the pain which is a result of poor posture or muscle strain and carry on regular activities within a short time,” assures Consultant Rheumatologist, Dr. Lalith S. Wijayaratne. |

Gay festival |
For the second year running, the city is gearing to host ‘Colombo Pride 2007’ – a week-long festival arranged by Equal Ground, an organisation dedicated to serving the interests of Sri Lanka’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning (LGBTIQ) community. |
