Hockey Explanation

With reference to the article which appeared in the Sunday Times 13th May 2007 – Sports Page. “Rugby Struck by Hockey”
The Hockey Clubs and Schools Protested to Matale Municipality saying how can the council give permission to play Rugger at Edward Park when the Matale Schools Hockey were not given permission to play Hockey at Edward Park as the renovation work at the grounds is not completed.

Furthermore Matale Municipal Council has passed a resolution in the 1960’s that the Edward Park is only for Hockey and Net Ball.
The Matale Municipal Council then gave the Aluvihare Stadium for the Exhibition Rugby match by canceling a Soccer match which was to be played at the stadium on this day.

I also wish to state that the Matale Hockey Association or the clubs never objected for the promotion of Rugby or staging a exhibition match at Matale.

The Sunday Times spoke the chief organizer and President of Central Province Rugby Union Isfan Omar. He said: “Aluwihare Stadium was just a printer’s mistake on the posters that were done. In fact as soon as I saw it I had sticker pasted over it stating that the venue was Edward Park. Just two days before the game we had a meeting at the Mayor’s office with officials of the Matale Rugby and sports council. They showed us Edward Park. Kandy’s coach Johann Taylor and I both agreed that it was a suitable venue given that we have eleven national players in our team. I invited all the presidents and officials of the 13 rugby playing clubs in the district to witness this game. I also spent Rs 15,000 on goal posts and such for ground. It was when our guys when to do the markings on the ground that this fracas occurred. Luckily I was able to contact the team from Police and inform them of the change of venue. All I can say is I am extremely disappointed at the way things turned out.”

When contacted Mayor of Matale Hilmy Mohommad who was to be the Chief Guest said: “back in the 1940’s Edward Park was designated only for hockey. Since the game has become much faster we now have an International Astro Turf. Thus Edward Park can be used for other sports. I have spent my own money in developing this ground. In addition I am a firm believer in the development of all sports. In sports no one cares what caste, creed or race one is from. And we did miss a golden opportunity to show case the facilities available for all sports. I have now appointed a committee to see how we can develop sports in this area.”
