Foul odours bother Marine Drive residents

Residents in several areas of Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya are being inconvenienced by bad odours caused by a blockage of sewerage lines and rainwater lines along the Marine Drive. The dumping of building waste in areas where construction work on the drive has been halted is the main cause of the blockages.

Road Development Authority (Colombo) executive engineer R. A. D. Kahatapitiya said construction work on the Marine Drive has been halted for many reasons, including legal issues raised by some residents.

“Building debris has been dumped in the area, causing blocked sewerage lines to overflow,” he said, adding that the RDA and the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) had cleared some areas, but unauthorised dumping continued to be a problem.

The CMC’s area engineer said unauthorised debris dumping has been going on for several months.

The building of the Marine Drive has involved the demolition of houses, and in certain places sewerage lines have been damaged,” he said.
