Bombshell bag in VIP neighbourhood

A bag containing ammunition, a passport of an SSP and a cap of an ASP was detected in a high security zone where ministers and senior military officials reside, military and police officials said. New Police Chief Jayantha Wickremaratna confirmed the detection.

The green bag was found by airmen guarding Air Force Commander Roshan Gunatillake’s residence yesterday morning. The bag was less than 100 metres away from the Commander’s residence.

The bomb disposal unit was summoned and they found 90 rounds of T-56 ammunition, a home-made gun, the cap of an ASP rank, two shoulder pads worn by Chief Inspectors, the expired passport of SSP Sarath Beddewela, Deputy Director of the Special Branch, a unit under the IGP. However the photograph of the officer had been removed from the passport.

They also found seven photographs in which Mr. Beddewela was present along with VIPs. The bag was handed over to the Cinnamon Garden’s police and investigations were taken over by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD).

Among other VIP’s residing in the area is Defence Spokesman and Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.
