Ananda College principal’s transfer raises questions

Ananda College Principal B.A. Abeyratne, who has been indicted for misleading the CID in an investigation related to Grade 1 admission, has been transferred to the Education Ministry instead of being suspended.

Education Ministry Secretary Nimal Bandara confirmed the transfer, but said they were awaiting more details from the Attorney Generals’ Department to take further action.

He said the usual practice was to transfer the suspect pending a departmental inquiry. But the transfer of Mr. Abeyratne to a senior position in the Ministry had brought three of the witnesses – a principal and two teachers – technically under him.

Public Administration Ministry Secretary D. Dissanayake said if a government servant had been indicted on criminal charges, the normal procedure was to interdict him immediately.

However, Mr. Dissanayake declined to comment on Mr. Abeyratne’s case saying he was not familiar with it.

Mr. Abeyratne was indicted for allegedly providing forged documents to the CID when police wanted a sample of his hand writing in an investigation related to a Grade 1 admission case.Mr. Abeyratne has been summoned to appear in Courts on October 17.
