Machines in motion

By Natasha Fernandopulle

An artist can draw inspiration from almost anywhere – from nature or an experience or something in the world we live in. B. P. Dep Thushara (32) is an artist who feels strongly about – how we have all become like machines, and this is where his inspiration comes from.

“Society runs according to certain systems/structures- we follow the same line of doing things, blindly and I don’t know if society even likes following such structures or not, but they follow them anyway,” he says, adding, “these social structures swallow up people.”

His paintings all have an abstract animal character of sorts, which is seen swallowing humans.
He went on to say that through his art he attempts to bring out the idea that those who survive, survive because they follow these systems but those who don’t follow these systems fail.

Thushara hails from the southern town of Tangalle, and did his A/Ls at Tangalle Maha Vidyalaya. This is where his love for art was nurtured.

Another aspect this young artist has portrayed through his paintings are how feelings and emotions are all kept within us, like sculptures. “We do not show our true feelings and as a result no one sees who you really are.”

This is his third solo exhibition and the 30 paintings were done within the last year. They will be on exhibit from August 8 to 27 at the Paradise Road Galleries.
