Television presenter, actor, model, slick dresser, trend setter, centre of attention…how better can you describe the bold, attractive, outspoken, unconventional, young celebrity Danu Innasithamby? Now venturing out onto the big screen, we catch up with Danu who speaks of his life, debut experience on film and what lies ahead…
Q: A brief update on what you’re up to now and over the past couple of years?
I first started as a Radio DJ at ABC Network when I was just 16+, then at E-Fm till I was 20 and then eventually at Channel One MTV, where I present Planet Pulse which is done by a great producer Charith, who is great with his music, and Good Morning Sri Lanka (GMSL) where I work with a wonderful team who bear with me when I’m at my worst! Ryan, Vrai, Shani, Natasha…you guys are the best! Without my team, I’m nothing!
Q: When did u decide to take to the big screen and how did u stumble upon this role?
After a Planet Pulse show in September, 2007, I got a call that offered me this chance! I have always loved acting, so obviously my instant response was YES! It’s been quite a great learning experience so far. I owe a lot to Chevaan Daniel the Head of the channel, as he’s always been a great support to me and allowed me to pursue my talents and develop and further them along the way.
Q: A brief overview of the plot and your role in the film?
In the movie I play the part of Romesh Siriwardena, a final year A/L student who’s also a musician. Romesh is a cocky charmer with a keen sense of humor. He also has a fascinating flair for the unexpected! He’s rebellious, yet hopelessly searching for answers. He thought his life was over when he came to know that his parents were diagnosed with HIV. He moved away from home in an attempt to get away from the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS. Then along came the breathtakingly beautiful Vihara, a kind and generous friend who made Romesh smile and live again! The story “Living with Hope” (WWW.livingwithhopethemovie.com) is also the story of their pure and innocent love.
The story and screenplay is written by Yolanda Weerasinghe, the screenplay is by Aruna Premaratne, it’s directed by Senesh Dissanaike Bandara, produced by Nita Fernando and the music is being done by Ranga Dasa.
Q: What is the most significant difference/es between television and film, and what did you find the most challenging to carry out?
The movie shoot is yet to start, but we did shoot a song and released it on December 1, 2008, coinciding with World Aids Day and the experience was great! As for the distinct differences between the two genres I’ve noticed thus far, when it’s a film a lot of people are watching your every move, your acting and you’re ears are always listening out for the word “cut!” Whereas on television, I tend to really live in the moment, it’s really from the heart and much more personal. I guess it’s also because I feel more home on television than I am on the big screen as yet.
Q: What do you like most about the kind of life you lead?
The work is always about making people happy, and informing them about what’s happening around them. I get plenty of chances to meet many different people. I can be as stylish as I want to be and everyday is so different from the next. And it’s also a good reason to frequent the gym!
Q: What’s next in line?
The movie, and everything that comes with it. As for thereafter, your guess would be as good as mine! All I know is that I’m more than ready to accept whatever surprise life has to throw my way!
