Loud blasts point to mass suicide?

Loud explosions on Wednesday night in Vellamullivaikal, located within the No-Fire or Civilian Safety Zone have become the talking point in the intelligence community.

Once a small coastal village rehabilitated after the devastating tsunami of December 2004, the area had been taken control of by fleeing guerrilla cadres. Though ensconced within a teeming civilian population, armed LTTE cadres had denied entry to them. Only selected cadres have been allowed to move in.

Intelligence sources said there were a number of reasons why the explosions, heard miles away, could have occurred. One is the possibility that the guerrillas were destroying documents and other material to prevent them falling into troops hands. Another they say is the likelihood of some senior cadres committing suicide.
