Angry UNP supporters attack party MPs

By Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk

Four UNP Members of Parliament, including the party’s deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya, were attacked by angry party supporters during a meeting in Matara to announce the UNP’s new Matara district chief organiser.

The other three MPs were the UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayake, Galle district MP Vajira Abeywardana, and the Matara district MP Sagala Rathnayake.

The crowd turned aggressive when Sagala Ratnayake was introduced as the new UNP Matara district organiser, replacing Jastin Galappatti.

The crowd started to boo and throw chairs at the UNP MPs after Mr. Galappatti’s speech, in which he said that the party he had worked tirelessly for had treated him unfairly.

The police intervened and escorted the MPs out of the area, after guarding the VIPs in a private residence for half an hour.
