The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), a German non-profit educational institution is holding an open forum on the success and the shortcomings of the education system in Sri Lanka titled "Free schooling in Sri Lanka - A successful model then but a myth now".
The forum is scheduled to be held on May 28 from 5.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Taj Samudra hotel with the participation of Education Ministry Additional Secretary W Dharmadasa, Mr. T. Mahasivam, Assistant Director of Education of the Eastern Province Ministry of Education and General Secretary of the Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union and Mohan Lal Grero Founder, Lyceum International school.
According to FES there is a rising demand across the country for private schools, to the disadvantage of State schools. Further every second student, even from the poorest households, is attending private tuition classes.
"Pupils - most of them attending State schools - are not learning enough at school to pass the State exams. This is why they have to extend their learning time, at the cost of family and friends' time," said a statement issued by the FES.
