Planned changes at the Inland Revenue Department have been suspended till the settlement of legal and administrative bottlenecks, Finance Ministry sources told the Sunday Times FT.
The appointment of a new Commissioner-General of Inland Revenue has also been put off indefinitely and Commissioner-General S. Angammana has been asked to continue his duties as Tax Chief. Mr Angammana quit the top IRD job a few weeks ago after being appointed Director-General (Revenue) at the Finance Ministry. When the Cabinet ratification of the appointment of Appeal Court Judge K.T. Chitrasiri as the new Commissioner-General of Inland Revenue was delayed due to matters pertaining to conflict of interest and protests from trade unions, Mr Angammana was asked to resume work at the department.Trade unions are urging the authorities to take action to remedy the uncertain situation in the department due to the failure to appoint a new Tax Chief.
