Sunil goes from Mala to ‘Ashokamala…’

Sunil Malawana of Mala fame has released his latest music video ‘Ashokamala’ last week.
Sunil whose songs like ‘Api Dedena’, ‘Mal’, ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and ‘Katath Katath’ became instant hits, ventured into this ‘Ashokamala’ project depicting the romantic tale of Saliya –Ashokamala more than 18 centuries ago.

Sunil, former member of Super Golden Chimes learnt his music from the legendary Clarence Wijewardene, is well known for his creativeness and musical talent. ‘Ashokamala’ was originally sung by veteran Vincent de Paul Peiris and penned by Karunaratne Abeysekara. Chandral Fonseka has directed the music.

Besides Sunil, the music video also includes performances by Robin Fernando, Sanoja Bibile, Rizfan Fa and Shiroshi Romeshika while Channa Wijewardena and his troupe have added colour with the dance performances. Udeni Subodha Kumara has handled the background creations.

His first Sinhala song ‘Api Dedena’ was released around 2004 to coincide with the Super Golden Chimes Reunion Concert. That song was among the 10 Sinhala songs in his maiden album ‘Mala’ which itself was a hit. The song Mala was the most played song on all TV Channels and hit the charts on every TV Channel in Sri Lanka during the period 2004/2005.

Today he is a well known and respected figure in the shipping industry.
