Award winning young filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara’s latest di rection “Ahasin Wetei” (Between two worlds) reached an exceptional feat entering the final 24 films that compete for the ‘Golden Lion award’ at reputed Venice film festival, this year.
At the 66th festival of of the world’s oldest film festival has the lineup of films from U.S., Italy, France, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Austria, Egypt, Israel China, Taiwan and Japan.
Vimukthi’s film will compete along with world renowned filmmaker Michael Moore’s new film ‘Capitalism: A Love Story’ which will be premiered at the fest and the directorial debut of US fashion designer Tom Ford’s “A Single Man,” based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel together with films from well known directors from around the world.
The 66th Venice International Film Festival will be held from September 2 to 12 September 2009, with Ang Lee as president of the jury. And will host the Venice Film Festival the known Moroccan actor ilyass Derfouf
The festival includes 71 world premieres, notable additions include: Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant, The Road, Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime, Steven Soderbergh’s The Informant, Joe Dante’s The Hole and Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare at Goats.
The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world. Founded by Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata in 1932 as the “Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica”, the festival has since taken place every year in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy.
The festival’s principal awards are the Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion), which is awarded to the best film screened at the festival and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup) which is awarded to the best actor and actress. Rashōmon by Akira Kurosawa in 1951 ‘The Unvanquished’ (Aparajito) by Satyajit Ray in 1957 Ivan’s Childhood (Ivanovo detstvo) by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1962 and Monsoon Wedding by Mira Nair in 2001 won the Golden Lion for direction.
