Rameez Raja, former Pakistani test cricketer and now a well-known cricket commentator, is investing in a fruits and vegetables project in Sri Lanka, the Board of Investment (BOI) said.

An agreement to this effect was signed between Mr Raja and the BOI under the BOI Certificate of Registration process. The investment agreement signed with Mr Raja, on behalf of Agro Farm Lanka, is for a project to grow fruits and vegetables. The project is an initial investment of Rs. 18 million on the 18-acre plantation at Anamaduwa.

The BOI said Mr. Raja has experience in the field, coming from an agricultural background in Pakistan. He has said he expects to expand operations to growing betel leaf, which has a high potential as an export to Pakistan. In a press release issued by the BOI, Mr. Raja said that he has strong connections with Sri Lanka, having first toured Sri Lanka in 1978 with the Pakistan under-19 team and several times later. “Sri Lanka is an excellent destination and is full of friendly people. Sri Lanka also has a good relationship with Pakistan,” he added.

Mr Raja said he received a lot of support from Roshan Abeysinghe and Ranjith Fernando, both Sri Lankan cricket commentators, in getting this venture underway.
