Various aspects of drama and stagecraft and lots of fun will all be part of ‘Holiday Fun with Kids at Play’, a two-day workshop to be conducted by Professor Neluka Silva on August 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the British School in Colombo.
This workshop for children between the ages of 9 and 13 by Prof. Silva, Founder/Director of Kids at Play -- a theatre group that has been involved not only in conducting drama workshops and producing plays for children for the last six years – will focus on concentration exercises, group work, theatre games and voice movement which can be the foundation for more advanced theatre work.
The first day will be devoted to understanding the different aspects of drama and confidence-building and the second to working with music, costumes, make-up and devising skits on various issues relevant to the lives of children in Sri Lanka.
This workshop follows a series of successful workshops and plays that have been produced by Prof. Silva and draws on her training, working with children at Pegasus Youth Theatre, Oxford. She has directed several productions with children including The Mixed-Up School (2007), Once Upon a Mix-Up (2008) and Uniformity Ltd. (2009) which was performed for the British Council Global Diversity Network Conference held in Colombo.
The entire ethos of the workshop is on devising and imagination and the children do not work with a written script but create their own stories through team work and exploring their individual potential for creativity. As the Principal of the British School, Andrew Fowler-Watt commented on the performance of Once Upon a Mix-Up: “It was wonderful to witness such an imaginative and enthusiastic evening of devised, new theatre; and one where the input of the children themselves was evidently central to the creative process.”
