Police yesterday questioned the employers of two teenaged domestics, whose limp bodies were found in a shallow canal at Bauddhaloka Mawatha in Colombo 7, although a suicide note had been found, the Sunday Times learns.
According to Cinnamon Gardens police, the two girls identified as Sumathi and Jeevarani from the tea plantations in Maskeliya were believed to have plunged into the waterway after leaving behind the note.
Investigators said they were treating the case with an open mind, and that statements had been recorded from the employers of the two girls. They also pointed out that the incident had occurred in a high security area.
The two domestics had taken up employment in two neighbouring households of two Colombo businessmen, about four months ago.
U. M. L. Rauf, the employer of one of the domestics had told police that he had last seen the two of them in the kitchen of his house around 10 p.m. on Friday, before he retired for the night.
The other domestic had stayed the night at his house, since her employer and family were attending a religious function at the local mosque, Mr. Rauf told police.
He had also told them that only on the following day his sister had realized that the two domestics were missing from the house and later they were alerted by residents that there were two bodies floating in the silt-filled canal.
According to police, the suicide note found in Mr. Rauf’s house stated that the two domestics had decided to end their lives owing to a problem they had with their parents and pleaded with the employers to forgive them.
Investigators are probing the authenticity of the suicide note and are also awaiting the outcome of the post mortem that would shed more light on the case. |
