Beyond Borders, one of Sri Lanka’s leading youth-led, youth-run activist organizations, is conducting a recruitment drive as part of expanding their operations in 2009. Beyond Borders is a space where young people can express themselves and work on development issues they are passionate and concerned about. They are entirely youth-led, youth-run and run by a core group of volunteers.
Their three themes – Identity, Diversity and Active Global Citizenship – captures the spirit of Beyond Borders. For each member of Beyond Borders these themes mean something special and a vision for a society and world they would like to live in. Beyond Borders provides a platform to work towards this vision and encourages other young people to come along.
Beyond Borders invites young people to join with them in the work they do under the theme of Active Global Citizenship.
Beyond Borders was established in 2005, and since have worked on a wide array of issues including HIV/AIDS, Media, Street Children, Peace and Governance, Poverty and Gender. They empower and inform through skill building and empowerment activities such as training workshops and publication of training manuals.
Beyond Borders is also recognized as a key organization that reaches out to young people through new and alternate media such as the internet through blogs, and importantly forum theatre. They describe themselves as a development-focused civil society organization, and not a charity, with the focus on social and development issues and action aimed at bringing about long-term and sustainable change.
“We can’t just be citizens, we need to be active citizens who look around and try to change the status quo for the better. As young people, we are the ones most responsible, and capable of doing that.
omplacency in this regard is simply not an option,” said Sachith Vidanapathirana, Executive Coordinator of Beyond Borders.
