Gamers in the hills of Kandy will be thrilled to know that Lanka eSports is bringing the World Cyber Gaming Championship to their doorstep this year. One of two preliminary rounds will be held in Kandy at which the best will be filtered at the national championships and then whizzed off to Chengdu, China for the WCG 2009 grand final where they will represent Sri Lanka.
Organised to take place at Extreme Computers in Kandy on 29 and 30 of this month, the WCG 2009 Sri Lanka preliminary round will be the first time a large scale gaming competition is to be held in Kandy. The games to be hosted at the event are Counterstrike 1.6, Warcraft3 (DOTA), COD4, FIFA and HALO (X-Box).
“We’ve already had an amazing 100 registrations from Kandy. Registrations are still open as we expect a minimum of 200 competitors from Kandy, and a gathering of over 500 at the event,” says co-founder of Lanka eSports Radeetan Kanatathillai.
According to Lanka eSports even though the concept of electronic sport is new to Sri Lanka, gamers here are keen and “have been playing seriously for many local tournaments and leagues.” They added that the current gaming community in the island consists of a wide variety of people though mostly in the age group of 13 to 30.
Those interested can register at www.lk.wcg.com. The premier partner for the WCG 2009 is Intel WCG 2009. While the electronic media sponsor IS E FM, The Sunday Times will be coming in as the print media sponsor. |
