’The Lanka Challenge 2009’ a first ever rally featuring auto trishaws more commonly known as ‘Three Wheelers will be on parade from September 6 to 15.
Travellers from all over the world will descend to Sri Lanka to take part in the 2009 Lankan Challenge.
The point of this challenge is two fold. One it tests the participants racing skills; driving a trishaws is no mean task. Secondly the get an opportunity to catch glimpses of the breath taking scenery that is prevalent all over the country. The rally will traverse through mountains, rainforests, coastal villages and bustling cities.
The 10 day rickshaw race, will give teams of two or three a close up and personal experience of some of the most fascinating historical sites and natural delights of the spice island, while raising money for local and international charities.
Julian Carnall, Partner and Organizer of Large Minority, who along with Juan Paredes conceived and organised the event said ‘The Lanka Challenge is an adventure race with a charity element to it, targeting international participants. Through our event we intend to promote tourism, help the local community and improve the country’s deteriorated international image. This is the perfect time to present the new face of Sri Lanka, and to give something back to the people. It is a country that we both admire very much’
The event which is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion Bureau is being organized in partnership with Let’s Travel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and will be filmed for a future documentary.
The total participants of 42 people will be divided into 20 teams will cover 1200 kms in 10 days with a chance of winning 1000 USD. The runner-up teams will receive 500 USD and 250 USD respectively. The winners will also automatically receive a complimentary transferable pass for a team of two to the following years Lanka Challenge race.
Participants will start from Negombo proceed to Sigiriya, Dambana, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Wirawila, Mirissa and will finally end in Colombo. Two rest days have been included in the jampacked schedule for the drivers to rest & recuperate.
