Umpires muddle to be taken up tomorrow

By S.R. Pathiravithana

The furore over the promotion of umpires by the SLC umpiring committee will be taken up for scrutiny by the Ministry of Sports tomorrow.

Sports Ministry secretary S. Liyanagama who once acted as the competent authority of Sri Lanka Cricket speaking to the Sunday Times said “I have been watching the developments in this regard over the past few days and I have noted that I should make inquiries as to what has transpired in this regard on Monday”.

Earlier the SLC Umpires committee messed up the promotions by allocating wrong marks at the bar Tests. After SLCUC had recommended three persons for promotion on the highest marks. A re-scrutiny revealed that factually the person who was placed fourth had obtained more marks than the person who had been placed at the third position. However, upon the revelation, the SLCUC had decided to promote all four candidates in an attempt to cover-up their folly, thus creating a major stir in the umpiring circles which ended up in a delegation of umpires making representations to the Minister of Sports.

In return the Sports Minister had ordered Sri Lanka Cricket to appoint Nuski Mohammed, R.J. de Silva and Peter Manuel to inquire into this incident, but, things were dragging some insiders alleged.

When asked what was the SLC position in this regard the IC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said “The SLC Interim Committee probed into this matter only last week and there we decided to go ahead with the inquiry. We have already verbally informed the relevant people about the decision, but the official intimation will go out on Monday once the minutes of the SLC Interim Committee meeting are out”.
