The Park Street Mews is where it’s all happening. A vast warehouse space off the city centre in Park Road is where a diverse collection of Sri Lankan art is on show as the first-ever Colombo Art Biennale welcomes art lovers and the curious passers-by. Over 40 artists have set up installations, paintings and displays under the Biennale theme ‘Imagining Peace’ providing visitors a chance to explore their vision.
On Wednesday evening, the organizers, participating artists and officials from Sri Lanka Tourism inaugurated the Biennale which continues today, Sunday, September 13 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
As leading artist and one of the curators Jagath Weerasinghe penned in the catalogue, “it is an experiment in every sense”.
Visitors were also encouraged to take in the Biennale- fringe events happening at galleries and cultural spaces around town.
Today’s event is a Discussion on Art & Politics in Sri Lanka at the Paradise Road Gallery at 5 p.m. - a conversation between Jagath who is founder of the Theertha collective, Professor of Architecture & Professor of Fine Arts and Sanjana Hattotuwa, senior researcher, Centre for Policy Alternatives, Head of ICT and Peacebuilding at InfoShare. |
