UN-HABITAT Business Award for Dr Darin Gunesekera

Dr Darin Gunesekera

Dr Darin Gunesekera, who was instrumental in helping set up the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1981-85 and then doing the Real Estate Exchange (REEL) project for slum rehousing in Colombo in 1998-2000, has received a global Award from UN-HABITAT in its first ever Business Awards in 2009.

His Social Real Estate Investment Trust (SREIT) methodology popularized by Wiros Lokh Institute and Capital Markets for the Marginalized was chosen through an independent Jury under UNHABITAT as one of the five Best practices in the World in the field of Affordable Housing. UN-HABITAT presented this Business Award to Wiros Lokh Institute for the concept by Dr Darin Gunesekera in New Delhi on 7 July 2009. This is part of the Business Forum Activities originally scheduled to be held in November 2008 as part of World Urban Forum 4, according to Dr Gunasekera. His system was initially tried out by him in the REEL project and he has expanded its use internationally.

UN-HABITAT is the UN Agency charged with Housing and is an inter-Governmental Forum. However in the past few years it has expanded to the Business and Citizen Sectors. The Business Forum awards are the natural outgrowth. These were the very first awards given out.
