As another move to promote the use of information communication technology amongst his students, Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara declared open a Wi-Fi enabled computer kiosk donated by the Old Boys Group of '93 last week.
The stand-up kiosk similar to the ones at international airports will provide free internet access to the students and full access to the Education Ministry approved schoolnet.
Royal College Union Secretary Rizan Nazeer, Treasurer Athula Munasinghe, Group of '93 Immediate Past President Boshan Dayarantne, Secretary Vasana Wickremasena, Treasurer Abdul Rahuman Pallie and members of the Executive Committee were present at the opening ceremony.
The principal said that the school will monitor the popularity of the use of the kiosk amongst the students and may introduce several more kiosks with the patronage of the Group of '93.
Earlier, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha officially launched the Wi-Fi facility at the Royal College, Colombo, making it the first public school in the country to acquire such modern infrastructure facility in April 2008.
Funded by the Old Boys Group of '93, phase one of this project enables the Wi-Fi facility at the main library, auditorium and adjacent classrooms. The facility includes system configuration to allow only suitable content for children on the Internet. The Group has pledged that the Wi-Fi facility will be extended to the Career Guidance Centre maintained by the Royal College Union and to other areas of the College despite the vast area of land that has to be linked.
The Wi-Fi enabled learning environment is expected to promote enthusiasm amongst Royal College students to follow new methodologies in learning beyond the existing physical boundaries, and amongst teaching staff to adopt new teaching and communication techniques, says Principal Upali Gunasekara. |
