The southern province went buzzing with spellers from Galle, Matara and Hambantota excelling in the preliminary rounds of the CIMA Spellmaster competition concluded recently.
The southern province did good last year where 3 spellers secured places in the final 20 at last year's competition, where H.N.Gayana Madushani of Southlands' College Galle was placed 4th.
In this year' s preliminary rounds, the competition at Richmond College - Galle witnessed 28 schools from the district taking part, of which, four schools stood out, namely, Christ Church Balika Vidyalaya and Mahinda College where 4 contestants from each school qualified for the Quarter Finals, and Sanghamitta College and Sacred Heart Convent where all 5 contestants who entered the competition qualified for the Quarter Finals.
Out of the 20 schools that participated in the competition conducted at Sujatha Vidyalaya - Matara, Rahula College and St.Thomas' Girls High School outshined, with 4 contestants from each school qualifying for the next round.
In Hambantota, Tangalle Balika Vidyalaya did exceptionally well at the Tangalle Town Hall, when all 5 contestants who entered the competition got through to the Quarter Finals.
Walasmulla National School made their presence felt with 4 contestants qualifying.
The 36 competitors from Galle, 30 from Matara and 20 from Hambantota who qualified to participate in the Quarter Finals consisting of 500 students will now have to battle amongst themselves at provincial level where 17 spellers will be selected to go into the semi final pool of 100 spellers.
