Children are indeed the precious wealth of all parents. It is thus a worldly ethic that parents untiringly devote their time and energy to bestow them with all wealth and treasure. It is a fact that parents succeed in getting their children a primary and secondary education at their village or city schools without much hassle. However it is thereafter that they face enormous difficulties and challenges in providing a higher education for them. It is because all students who manage to qualify for university admission do not get the opportunity to enter universities here. Only a small fraction of them get this opportunity because our university system does not have the required funds or infrastructure for the purpose.

It is our experience that the majority of those who seek higher education overseas are inclined to study medicine. Sri Lankan students started pursuing higher studies in Soviet Russia as far back as 1960 and thousands of them who entered various medical institutions there have qualified as Doctors of Medicine and are now engaged in the medical profession here in Sri Lanka as well as abroad. Belarus is now an independent, sovereign country situated in Eastern Europe, bordering Russia in the north and east, Ukraine in the south and Latvia, Lithuania and Poland in the west. Vitebsk is one of the main cities of Belarus. The distance from Minsk, the capital of Belarus, to Vitebsk is about 300 kms. The International Highway from Moscow to Europe which runs across Belarus passes through Minsk and Vitebsk as well. It takes only a mere 2 ½ hours to get to Vitebsk, from Minsk, motoring through this highway.
The VSMU has been in existence for nearly 80 years as of now and it is reckoned to be an old and well established medical institution. Furthermore, nearly 30 years have passed since foreign students started studying here and more than 1250 them, including over 100 from Sri Lanka have graduated thus far. It comprises of seven faculties including the General Medical, Stomatological and Pharmaceutical faculties. Foreign students are offered to study General Medicine in one of two mediums, namely in Russian medium or English medium. More than 5000 students including foreigners are presently studying.
The educational process is organized and conducted by a huge tutorial cadre of 500 staff among whom you find nearly 50 professors, 150 associate professors, 70 doctors and 180 candidates of sciences. Meanwhile, the main clinical base of the VSMU comprises of four Regional Clinical Hospitals as well as its own Clinic and others. VSMU degrees are recognized by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG, Philadelphia, USA) Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS, Dallas, USA) General Medical Council (GMC - UK) and Medical Councils of Ireland, India, Sri Lanka and many more.
