Over Sri Lanka, this year 2009
Renewing our memory
Of that Great Theri Sanghamitta,
Who introduced the Order of
Buddhist Nuns
To Lanka, our famed Buddhist isle,
Thus opening the doors
To Feminist Rights;
O, Great Theri
You brought another priceless jewel,
A sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi,
The oldest tree in the world,
Venerated all over the world;
Sri Lankan women, ever indebted to thee,
Ever pay homage to thee
On this Unduwap Full Moon Day.
This year there’s greater brilliance
Since pilgrims can worship the Bodhi
Without any fear of terrorists,
After a period of 30 long years.
It is the result of the historic victory
Of our brave sons of the Tri Forces
Who freed our Mother Lanka
From the clutches of terrorists;
We are ever grateful to them
For their invaluable dedication;
To them we pay our utmost tribute
With honour and gratitude
On this Unduwap Full Moon Day.
Also, we extend our gratitude
To all those who laid their lives
All these three decades,
On this Unduwap Full Moon Day.
May they attain Nibbana.
