Seminar on National Medicinal Drug Policy

A public seminar on the need for a speedy implementation of the National Medicinal Drug Policy will be held on Saturday December 5 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute auditorium at Independence Square, Colombo 7, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The seminar is being jointly organized by the Health Action International Asia-Pacific in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya and the Peoples Movement for Rights of Patients.
Speakers include Prof. Carlo Fonseka, Chrishmal Warnasuriya - Attoney-at-law, Prof. Colvin Gunaratne, Prof. Geetha Fernando, Prof. Krishanta Weerasuriya, Dr. Ananda Wijeyawickrema, Dr. Palitha Abeyakoon, Chinta Abeywardena, Dr. K. Balasubramaniam and Louis Benedict.

KHS Retro-Fusion

A spectacular event has been organised to celebrate the Kandy High School OGA (Colombo Branch) Golden Jubilee. KHS Retro-Fusion - a lobby concert to celebrate this milestone will take place on December 6, at 6.30 p.m. at Waters Edge, Battaramulla featuring well-known performing artistes of both song and dance.

DBU X’mas sale

The Dutch Burgher Union of Ceylon will hold its annual Christmas sale on Sunday, December 6 from 10 a.m. onwards. A variety of items such as garments, household goods, costume jewellery, linen, shoes etc will be on sale.

Also on sale will be the ever popular Burgher delicacies.

Public lecture

An illustrated public lecture on ‘Sinhalese Impact on Myanmar Culture, Religion, Literature, Art and Architecture’, by Dr. Hema Goonatilake, will be held tomorrow at 5 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The lecture is organized by the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka.
All are welcome.

Lankan awarded an MBE

Mercy Jeyasingham, non-executive director on the NICE Board, was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday honours announced in June in the UK.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health in the UK.

Ms. Jayasingham is a management consultant, trainer and interim manager and has held senior posts in both the voluntary and public sector.

 

Eye camp

The "Vision for Vision" eye camp organized by the Royal College Group of 90 for the second consecutive time will be held at the College hall on December 3 for Royal College teachers, non academic staff as well as retired teachers. Reading glasses will be donated to those who are in need after doctors' examinations. Cataract examinations will also be carried out and lenses will be provided free of charge to those who need to undergo such surgery.

The programme will be from 8.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. The Organizing Committee invites all teachers, office staff as well as retired teachers of Royal College to participate.

Lions Christmas sale

The Lions and Lion Ladies of Colombo (Host) Club will hold their annual 'Christmas Sale with Eve' on Sunday, December 6 at Shalika Hall, Park Road. Colombo 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Clothes, linen, shoes, cosmetics, jewellery, household items, home-cooked food and much more will be available at bargain prices. Those who wish to reserve a table to sell their products can contact Lion Lady Sathya on 0773 634173 or 2372508.

All proceeds will go to help the various service projects of the club.

An appeal to help 2 children

S.A. Gaffoor, the father of four, a three wheel driver whose wife died five months ago, is appealing for help for his children Fathima Sameera, 9 and Fathima Rikasa 4, who both have leukemia. Both daughters require treatment at the Laboratory Centre of Minakshi Mission Hospital in India.

The treatment will cost Rs. 2.5 million and Mr. Gaffoor is appealing to kind donors to send contributions to Account No: 8570008679 of the Commercial Bank, Grandpass Branch. For further information contact S.A. Gaffoor, No. 66/F, San Joseph Street, Colombo 14.

Cancer Society X’mas sale

The Sri Lanka Cancer Society Moratuwa branch will hold its annual Christmas party on December 1 at the Lagoon View Hall in Moratuwa. Award-winning magician Priyantha Gamage will entertain the patients and Clinton Gunawardena will provide the music. The society supports 60 cancer patients with financial assistance and other help. Each patient is entitled to bring two guests for the Christmas party and the society is appealing for donations to make this event a success. Daya Mina exhibition and sale

The 14th annual exhibition and sale of a variety of handicrafts and other household items produced by the students and youngsters of Daya Mina - Nugegoda, Supem Uyana-Gonapinuwela and Meth Mihira-Koralawella, will be held today, at the Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya from 10 a.m to 9 p.m.
