Spellmaster goes to Uva, Eastern Provinces

The all island schools spelling competition "Spellmaster" which is now building up popularity amongst all ages with the telecasting of the programme on Sirasa TV, switched focus to the Uva and Eastern province of Sri Lanka.

97 students from these two provinces competed in the 3rd quarter final where two competitions were conducted at the CIMA auditorium in Colombo to select 20 spellers who would move into the semi finals, where 100 top spellers in the country are tipped to be competing.

The competition held in the morning had Jainulabdeen Ibraheim from R.K.M.Sri Koneswara Hindu College Trincomalee and H.T.K Ekanayake from Kuda Kusum Balika Maha Vidyalaya Badulla breezing through to the semi finals, getting both words given to them spot on in the first round of words. Other schools that had students qualifying were, Meera Balika Maha Vidyalaya Batticaloa, Dutugemunu Central College Monaragala, Mahmud Ladies College Kalmunai, St.Mary's College (National School) Trincomalee, Vincent Girls High School Batticaloa, Vishaka Balika Madhya Maha Vidyalaya Badulla and Welimada Central College Badulla.

Two students that did extremely well in the afternoon were J.M.E Pulari Karunaratne from Kuda Kusum Balika Maha Vidyalaya Badulla and A.R Fathima Zizanul Shahnas from Mahmud Ladies College Kalmunai. Students from Al Hamra Maha Vidyalaya Akkaraipatu, Alpitiya Maha Vidyalaya Monaragala, Kattankudy Central College (National College) Batticaloa, Sir Razik Fareed Maha Vidyalaya Badulla, R.K.M.Sri Koneswara Hindu College Trincomalee, Vincent Girls High School Batticaloa and Vishaka Balika Madhya Maha Vidyalaya Badulla too qualified for the semis.

Overall, Mahmud Ladies College Kalmunai did brilliantly having 4 students qualify to the semi finals. Kuda Kusum Balika Maha Vidyalaya Badulla, R.K.M.Sri Koneswara Hindu College Trincomalee, Vincent Girls High School Batticaloa and Vishaka Balika Madhya Maha Vidyalaya Badulla were the only other schools to have 2 students succeeding.
