The late Anura Gunasekera was one of those rare photo-journalists of the old school. Unassuming yet observant, his pictures beautifully complemented the news that accompanied them.
I enjoyed taking Anura with me to attend or cover important functions, because he was always the prefect gentleman. He knew how to behave, and would never embarrass his newspaper by over-indulging, something many of his peers were guilty of. An honest photographer, Anura was not one to linger after events to curry favours.
Even when he left news photography to take up a government job, Anura would not forget his old friends, and would often come by for a chat.
Anura will be sadly missed by the many journalists who worked with him.
May his soul rest in peace.
