People gathered in public places around the country, especially in the southern parts, to celebrate the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa following Tuesday’s presidential poll.
Soon after the victor was announced on Wednesday there were spontaneous street parades and the sounds of fire crackers and loud cheers.
Kiribath (Milk Rice) was served in some areas. In Chilaw a huge dish of milk rice was prepared using more than 100kg of rice, by supporters of the government.
Towards down south foreigners were also seen joining in the celebrations enjoying our traditional sweetmeats for the first time.
Our photographers captured these scenes in some parts of the country. |
