Independence day ceremonies in Kandy

Independence Day commemoration ceremonies will be held at the Maha Maluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy on February 4th this year.

The 62nd Independence Day celebration is to be held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rakapaksa --a change from previous years where Independence Day celebrations were held mainly at Independence Square in Colombo.

This year the celebrations are scheduled to be centred mainly in the hill country. Celebrations will begin with religious ceremonies at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Kandy, the Selva Vinayagar Kovil Kandy, the Meeramakkam Mosque, St. Anthony’s Church and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

An all-night pirith ceremony is to be held at the Independence Square on February 2, followed by a Sanghika dana at the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya on February 3.

Coinciding with Independence Day celebrations the fourth Deyata Kirula exhibition will be opened by President Rajapaksa at the Pallekelle International Buddhist Research Centre premises on February 4.
