The Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka - AATSL, is the only professional institute which conducts Accountancy Examinations at technician level in this country. On the initiative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, AATSL was established in 1987 to address the growing demand for trained competent support staff who can provide Professional Accountants with the information they need. AATSL is an Associate Member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA).
AATSL has District Information Centres - (DICs) at Professional Accounting Institutes and Private Education Centres island wide for the students and the public to get information such as student registration, examinations training and employment opportunities. The "Students' Guide" which contains all details of AAT examinations, Syllabi of Subjects and Application Forms is available at these centres.
ATSL has several Private Education Centres - (PECs), where classes are conducted to prepare students for the AAT examinations, both in Colombo and in different towns in various parts of the country.
AAT examinations are held at three levels namely Foundation, Intermediate and Final, in Sinhala, English and Tamil media, in June and December. The duration of each level is six months. The three levels can be completed in 1 ½ years by GCE (A/L) and (O/L) students and in 1 year by GCE (A/L) Commerce stream students. AATSL has a programme to assist students to get placements for Practical Training, which is mandatory for admission as a Member of the Association.
AATSL Examinations are a fast track to become a Chartered Accountant or Chartered Management Accountant, or to obtain a University Degree in Management, Administration, Commerce, Law or Computer or gain admission to foreign universities as an internal student.
AATSL examinations are most suited for students with GCE (O/L) and (A/L - any subject stream) qualifications. Those who are awaiting (O/L) results also can enrol for the courses to make profitable use of their time. You are eligible to sit the AAT Examinations if you have six passes at the GCE (O/L). To make things easy for the students AATSL has a special scheme which allows students to pass subject by subject and qualify for a pass at a particular level. On the other hand a student can sit all eight subjects of Foundation and Intermediate levels at one and the same examination.
