Re-inventing Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, Jehan Aloysius in his latest production titled – An Inspired Swan Lake promises a show to remember.
The performance is presented by Centre Stage Productions in partnership with One Trust Sri Lanka, and is set to be a truly groundbreaking creative work of physical theatre.
This spectacular show, designed and choreographed by Jehan Aloysius, will dazzle audiences at The Lionel Wendt Theatre from March 5-7.
The cast comprises soldiers from Ranaviru Sevana, who have lost their limbs in the line of duty during the recently concluded war, as well as hearing-impaired participants from the Sunera Foundation’s workshops around the island. They are supported by trainer/performers from the StageHands Project which is the humanitarian arm of CentreStage Productions.
The theme behind An Inspired Swan Lake is ‘re-discovering the human body in all its strength and beauty.’ The performance celebrates the enduring strength and splendour of the human body through dance and acrobatics in a story that is both magical and touching.
The plot of the play follows a young man named Nicholas, who is forced to live as a swan by night through the machinations of an evil Sorceress. Nicholas is befriended by Gabrielle, much to the anger of Gabrielle’s jilted suitor, Troy. Meanwhile Jessica, Gabrielle’s best friend is torn between her friendship with Gabrielle and her secret love for Troy.
Nicholas is forced to face many challenges as a result of this love quadrangle, as well as the Sorceress and her black swan minions who take pleasure in tormenting him. Nicholas seeks to overcome these challenges so he can be finally united with Gabrielle, with the help of a flock of mystical white swans.
An Inspired Swan Lake was successfully performed on a much smaller scale in October last year in a production organised by the Sunera Foundation, receiving standing ovations each night. The production has also been featured on the BBC World report and CNN. Colombo audiences will get the chance to see the revised version of the play which has been expanded to showcase the new talents of the cast.
The box office is now open at the theatre, and the production will be in aid of One Trust Sri Lanka which supports children affected by conflict. The media partners for the event are Gold FM, Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and the Colombo Spirit. |
