Acclaimed teledrama maker Piyal Yatawara’s third direction ‘Doratu Rakinno’ is an attempt to discuss the dreams and aspirations of a set of underpaid group of people.
Piyal started his direction with ‘Kammiththa’, a teledrama which was nominated as one of the Best Teledramas of the year 2004 and his second direction ‘Athuru Para’ in 2008 was rated as one of the highly rated teledramas of the year.
‘Selection of veteran scriptwriter Daya Rajapaksa’s stories which appeared as serialized stories in newspapers played a major role in the success of my directions,’ said Piyal who made all his three teledramas based on serialized stories of Rajapaksa.
‘Like my previous plays, in Doratu Rakinno also there is a very powerful story presented with a humanistic touch. A love of a middle aged bachelor and social obstacles he faces as a result are discussed in the story,’ said Piyal.
Having completed his secondary education, Piyal joined ‘Tharunaya’ youth newspaper and worked under its editor and well-known teledrama director Rodney Vithanapathirana. ‘I assisted in a number of teledramas directed by Rodney and it was through him that I learnt the direction,’ said Piyal with gratitude.
Speaking on the sad plight in the teledrama field in Sri Lanka, Piyal said that the viewers have given up the medium of teledrama due to their low quality. ‘The audience is educated and one cannot take them for a ride’ says Piyal.
‘One of the main reasons for this is that the teledrama had become a profitable business and businessmen have entered to dish teledrama out as a market product but not as an art,’ Piyal explained.
