Petes stun Trinity to take sevens cup home

St Peter’s won the Cup in the Sri Lanka Schools Under 20 Division One seven-a-side rugby tournament played at the Royal College Sports Complex at Reid Avenue yesterday. The Peterites defeated a spirited Trinity side by 38 points to ten in the final played in front of a sparse crowd.

Earlier the first Cup quarter-final between St. Peter’s and Kingswood College Kandy turned out to be a rather contentious affair. St. Peter’s went on to win the match by 17 points to 12. St Peter’s went on to beat S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia by 39 points to 7 in the semi–finals. The Thomians defeated traditional rivals Royal College by ten points to nil in their quarter-final clash.

The second semi-final in the Cup draw saw Ananda bugged by Trinity by 41 points to nil. In their respective quarter-final matches Ananda dispatched Mahanama by 17 points to nil while Trinity thrashed Dharmaraja College Kandy by 26 points to 5.

In the Plate section of the draw, S. Thomas’ College Bandarawela drew a bye in to the semi-finals where they lost to St. Sylvester’s College Kandy by 29 points to nil. The boys from Kandy beat Dharmapala College Pannipitiya by 17 points to 12 in the quarter-final clash. Wesley College cruised in to the second semi-final; with a 26 points to nil victory over Maliyadeva College Kurunegala. They then defeated D. S. Senanayake College by 22 points to five before winning the Plate with an easy 38 points to nil over St. Sylvester’s Kandy.

The Bowl section Royal College Panadura who went through to final via byes in the quarter-final and semi-final clinching the title. They defeated St. John’s Nugegoda by 31 points to nil. An official speaking to the Sunday Times said that since this tournament was for the top teams, they are in the process of making arrangements to conduct a similar tournament for Division Three teams in the month of April. They are currently on the look out for sponsors.
