KET success in Down Under

Kumara Ekanayake Trio, a popular outfit from Moratuwa is now based in Melbourne, Australia. The band moved Down Under in 2008 and is now a popular name in the Sri Lankan music circuit.

While on vacation during Avurudu in Sri Lanka, Kumara Ekanayake visited TV Times office last week. He was commenting on his new assignment in Australia.

‘We are quite popular with our community and as well as others. We play most of the big Sri Lankan functions in Melbourne and Sydney’ leader Kumara said.

Kumara Ekanayake Trio popularly known as KIT comprises of Kumara (Keyboards and vocals), his wife Stephny Samarakoon on vocals, Ivore Demel, and ex Sunflower on base and vocals and ex Zodiac Dilon Silva on Octopad and vocals.

‘Though we have four members, for some functions we go as a duo. I perform with Stephny only. It depends on the function and the organizers have a choice of full four piece band or the duo’ he explained.

Kumar Ekanayake Combo was in action at the ‘Matara Rahula Old Boys Association’ to raise funda for the Tsunami Hospital in Matara’ Melbourne on last December 31. It was a great success and the organizers want us to come to Sri Lanka and perform for their Sri Lankan event too’ Kumara added.

Kumara Ekanayake Trio was in showbiz for the last 15 years, which was made up of Stephny, Thushara Pereis and Kumara himself. The band played for many weddings and parties in Sri Lanka, before they took wings for London in 2006.

Over the years Kumara has released 3 CD’s, one audio cassette, 6 video clips and 70 original songs to his credit. ‘Latha’, ‘Poddak Kate’, ‘Nandakkage bath Kade’ and ‘Dillenne Tharakawee’are some of the chart toppers for KIT in Sri Lanka

‘As future plans, I am determind to stage my own concert in Melbourne and in Sri Lanka too. I will still work on creating my new songs and I look forward to release my maiden live music DVD in Australia’ he said.
