Foot-and-mouth disease in Kandy

Kundasale and Meda Maha Nuwara in the Kandy District have been declared as ‘infected areas’ after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

The District’s Animal Health Chief Nimal Chandrasiri said the two areas had been gazetted as infected areas and there should be no movement of cattle or cart traffic to and from the two areas.

“We have vaccinated more than 5,000 cattle and are trying to bring the situation under control in the areas,” he said.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious -- and sometimes fatal -- viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic animals such as cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs, as well as antelope, bison and other wild bovid, and deer.
