President to attend SAARC Summit

By Leon Berenger

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave tomorrow for the 16th Summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to be held in the Bhutanese capital of Thimpu on Wednesday and Thursday.

Foreign Secretary Romesh Jayasinghe told the Sunday Times that President Rajapaksa would meet with the other SAARC leaders for bilateral talks also.

He said the Bhutan summit would endorse a joint declaration titled ‘Towards a Green and Happy South Asia’ and two pacts on the environment and trade.

This will be the President’s first official overseas trip after being re-elected to office in January. It will also be the first official overseas assignment for the new External Affairs Minister G. L. Peiris, he said.
