Ramyani Rathnayaka from Watapuluwa, Kandy won the Central Province Fashion Designer of the Year 2010 contest held recently at Hotel Suisse, Kandy with her creative and colourful designs using local handloom fabric.
Shiromika Rajapaksa who also presented a design for smart casual evening wear using handlooms was second and Vinodha Godamunne came third with her Kandyan saree design. Nipuni Wilson was named the best model of the show.
The competition which was a first for Kandy, attracted 32 designers. The Central Province Women’s Chamber together with the Provincial Ministry of Industries organized the event.
Chamber president Ms. Shirley Jayewardane told the Sunday Times that the main purpose of the event was to encourage local designers and help them reach a wider market for their products.
Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayaka and Tourism Promotion Minster Faizer Musthapha were among the distinguished guests.
Editor of Lanka Woman Shehara Rajapaksa, events promoter Subashini Dias Abeygunawardana and Director of Thilanka Hotel Thanuja Gunawardana were on the panel of judges. |
