The Russian war drama, ‘At Dawn its Quiet Here’, a story of five brave anti-aircraft gunner girls who take up an almost impossible mission in the heart of war will be screened at 6 pm on Wednesday, May 19 at Russian Centre, Independence Avenue, Colombo-07.
Nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film at 1972 Oscar, the film won Memorable prize when competing at the Venice International Film Festival-1972.
The action takes place during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). Russian Karelia, in the autumn of 1941. Five anti-aircraft gunner girls, who are mostly less than twenty years old, and their commander, Sergeant Vaskov, discover that a German subversive detachment has landed in this, still far-removed from the front line, locale.

However, the saboteurs have broken communications, cutting off the small group from their own people and leaving them no hope of getting any help. Vaskov and the five girls accept battle, being outnumbered by sixteen Fascists, armed to the teeth. |
