Teaching diplomatic skills to consuls

A seminar on Diplomacy and Consular Affairs was held at the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute premises yesterday with the participation of several honorary consuls.

Lectures on key topics relating to diplomacy and consular affairs were delivered by leading figures from the legal and diplomatic fields.

Attorney General’s Department Senior State Counsel Rajiv Goonetilleke held a presentation-cum-lecture on the history of diplomacy and diplomatic law, institutions of diplomacy, negotiation of international conventions covering role and functions of diplomats, consuls and honorary consuls.

Advisor to the President on International Affairs and former Ambassador and Foreign Secretary Nihal Rodrigo delivered a lecture on new forms of diplomacy, economic diplomacy and public diplomacy.
The role of honorary consuls was discussed by former Ambassador and former Chief of Protocol N. Navaratnarajah when he lectured the gathering on the office of honorary consuls, privileges and responsibilities, liaison with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Sri Lanka Protocol Manual.
