Nicobar Islands (in red): epicentre of tremor |
A tsunami warning was issued early this morning, and residents in coastal areas were alerted as several parts of Sri Lanka experienced a tremor around 1.00 am today following an earthquake near the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean.
This was confirmed by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau chairman, Dr. N P Wijayananda. He said the earthquake was of 7.7 magnitude.
Residents in Colombo, Galle, Negombo and Matara said buildings shook as they felt the tremor, which lasted for about one minute.
The earthquake prompted a tsumani-watch in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. |
