The views and aspirations of the Sri Lankan people should be considered in the Constitution-making process, says the Bakeer Markar Centre for National Unity.
The independent civic organisation plans to conduct seminars for political parties, religious and ethnic groups, professional bodies, media personnel, trade unions and civic organisations from all the provinces.
“The Sri Lanka Constitutions of the post-Independence era – the Constitutions of 1972 and 1978 – were not really evolved through the aspirations of the Sri Lankan populace,” the Bakeer Markar Centre states.
“This exclusion has undermined the legitimacy of the final outcome and eventually resulted in civil disturbances, division among ethnic groups, alienation and estrangement among the different communities. This has brought about serious setbacks to democratic values, good governance, peace-building and national unity.” |
