Devananda claims pardon

By Chris Kamalendran

Minister and EPDP leader Douglas Devananda will make representation to a Tamil Nadu court tomorrow claiming amnesty under the Indo-Lanka peace accord for alleged offences committed in 1986 in South India.

Douglas Devananda

Mr. Devananda who was a member of the official delegation accompanying President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his official visit to India and returned on Friday told the Sunday Times that his lawyers would be making the representations at the Chennai High Courts.

“Under the Indo-Lanka accord all militants were granted an amnesty for any offence committed before the agreement and therefore the pardon covers me as well,” he said.

Mr. Devananda accused a pro-LTTE group of raking up a 1986 incident where a person was shot dead during a clash between two groups. He said he was not directly involved in the incident, but some of his supporters were present there.

“I have travelled to India many times after the incident and the issue has not been raised. This is the first time it became an issue,” he said.

Mr. Devananda was present when President Rajapaksa held talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
