A Business Times poll this week on the Budget presented to parliament drew a mixed response with 50 % of the respondents saying it was negative while 40% responded positively.
The balance 10 % were undecided. The second question as to whether the budget was of benefit to the general public also drew a similar response with a 50 % NO vote while just 30% said it was good for all groups of people.
A Peradeniya academic said the budget did not give any new revenue proposals nor did it indicate how revenue targets would be achieved. “It is very unlikely that these targets would be achieved. It is good piece of fiction,” he noted. The CEO of a Colombo firm, said the budget was good with the duty reduction on plant and machinery, raw material needed for manufacture, and motor vehicles a positive move. |
