Swinburne was founded as a technical college by engineer and politician George Swinburne in 1908. In its hundred-year history it has grown to be an institution offering qualifications across all levels of study, from English language courses to PhDs. Today it accommodates around 30,000 students and 2,200 staff across five campuses in Melbourne. Two of its largest campuses are located in prestigious suburbs just 15 minutes by public transport to the city centre. Swinburne also has a campus in Sarawak, Malaysia.
While Swinburne is clearly focused on giving its students the best education possible, it also wants them to enjoy their time in Melbourne. It works hard to take care of students both in and out of the classroom.
Swinburne International's bilingual staff is responsible for the admission, orientation and support of all international students. They are the first point of contact when students arrive, and provide ongoing support with applications, accommodation, visas, health insurance, course information and referrals to other services both on and off-campus. Other specialised services for international students include career advice, counselling, financial advice, study assistance and an after-hours support hotline. The multi-million dollar Student Services Hub, to be completed in 2010, will provide fantastic new facilities for students. Located on the Hawthorn campus, the $A30 million, seven-storey building will house the following:
4project study spaces
4 computer labs
4 recreational facilities
4 student advocacy services
4 career advisory services
" a multi-faith room
" a medical centre
" student counselling
" a psychology clinic
" equity and disability support services.
