Shines at all-island singing contests

Holy family convent, bambalapitiya

The Tamil and Sinhala choirs of Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya competed for the first time at the All Island Singing Competition conducted by the Ministry of Education. Although the school’s English choir has competed many times and has won accolades in the past, it is the first time that choirs of the native languages entered the competition, and they have done exceptionally well proving the talent of the students, and the hard work of the teachers.

The Tamil Choir which competed at the Jaffna Vembadi Girls’ High School, which was an experience in itself for the students from Colombo, was placed first nationally. The choir was placed first at the Zonal and Provincial levels as well. The students were trained by Ms.Sajeevi Rasiah. The students sang Kaliyuga Varadhan to Brindhavana Saranga Raga set to Adhi Thala. Manoshini Ethiraj was placed 1st in Tamil Grammar at the Zonal and Provincial levels and thereafter was placed 2nd at the All Island competition.

The Sinhala choir which competed in the semi classical group singing category was trained by Vaidya Visharada Ravindri Ratnayaka. The choir was accompanied by Tabla player Ajith Aloysious (a music teacher of Lumbini Vidyalaya) and the school oriental orchestra.
